About Gangotri Temple — The Sacred Origin of Ganga
Gangotri Temple is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in India and one of the four Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of 3,048 metres on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi district, this 18th-century temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga — the sacred river personified as a deity.
According to Hindu mythology, it was here that King Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring the River Ganga from heaven to earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. The exact spot where Ganga descended is marked by a divine rock called Bhagirath Shila, located just outside the temple complex. The nearby glacial source of Ganga — Gaumukh Glacier — is 18 km upstream by trekking trail.
Gangotri Temple Opening Date 2026
Gangotri Temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya — an auspicious Hindu festival falling in late April or early May. The temple remains open until Diwali (October–November), after which the deity is moved to Mukhba village for the winter months.
Gangotri Temple opening date 2026 will be announced by the Gangotri-Yamunotri Temple Committee approximately one month before Akshaya Tritiya. Expected: Late April / Early May 2026. Gangotri Temple History & Mythology
The current Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha general, and later renovated by the Jaipur royal family. The temple is constructed in white granite in a classic Garhwali architectural style with a 20-foot high shikhara (spire).
The most sacred structure near the temple is Bhagirath Shila — a natural rock where King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated for years to bring Ganga to earth. Pilgrims offer water and flowers at this rock before proceeding for main temple darshan. The river flowing beside the temple is called Bhagirathi at this point — it is only called Ganga after joining Alaknanda at Devprayag.
